Gnoll Country Park's Old Hollow Tree – A Neath legend that's stood the test of time!

Tucked near the visitor centre and fishpond in Gnoll Country Park, this ancient Hollow Oak (aka the Old Hollow Tree) has been a magical spot for generations. Completely hollow inside since at least the 1950s, kids have been climbing in, hiding, and playing inside it for decades – it's like nature's own secret den!

Despite being reinforced with metal bars to keep it safe, this tough old survivor still bursts into leaf and drops acorns every year. In 2017, it was crowned Wales' Tree of the Year after a massive public vote – proof of how much locals love it!

It's become an iconic landmark: the finish line for weekly Gnoll Parkrun, a photo op for families, and a symbol of the park's rich history (on the old Mackworth estate grounds dating back centuries).
