Neath Indoor Market – A little blast from the past!

Back in 1837 (yep, the year Queen Victoria kicked off her epic reign!), Neath got its very own covered market thanks to the Neath Market Act 1835. No more street stalls in the rain – they built a proper spot on Green Street to get all the trading indoors: fresh meat, veg, fish, you name it!

By the early 1900s, it was looking tired, so they knocked most of it down and rebuilt it grander in 1904 – that's the bones of the market we still love today.

It became THE place to be: Saturday crowds, chip stalls, Peggy’s Café chats, and that unbeatable local banter.

Got a refresh in 1999 (new roof, frontage spruce-up for the Millennium), and it's now Grade II listed – proper heritage gem!

These days,it's hanging tough against supermarkets and online shopping. Still full of independent traders: top-notch butchers, Welsh cakes, pies, quirky stalls, and that warm community feel,   and yes its still got great local banter!

One of the last true old-school indoor markets in South Wales – let's keep supporting it. Who's popping in for a bacon bap or fresh produce this weekend?
